Bifidobacterium in the gut: in the beginning
Bifidobacteria are among the very first microorganisms to colonise the human gastrointestinal tract and quickly establish themselves as the biggest population of microbes in the intestines of breast-fed infants. They are believed to exert a number of positive health benefits, including protection against inflammation, obesity and colorectal cancer, as well as contributing to cardiovascular health and boosting immune function.
In this article we learn about our discovery of this microbe, and how we have now identified over 50 different strains of Bifidobacteria, all of which have extensive and positive health benefits. Understanding is gained on how our diets impact and effect the growth of this microbe.
