Over many years of teaching Baking as Lifestyle Medicine (BALM), I noticed a clear pattern: people who struggled to digest bread were often showing signs of deeper imbalances. These symptoms — bloating, discomfort, fatigue — are rarely about the bread alone. They’re often a reflection of issues with digestion, absorption, nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, or metabolism.
Sourdough can help — but it’s rarely the whole solution. Through a functional nutrition and lifestyle medicine approach, I use your relationship with bread as a lens to uncover and interpret what your body is trying to tell you. Together, we personalise your baking, eating, and sharing of bread to become a therapeutic, joyful, and deeply supportive part of your wellbeing.
HOW THE ASSESSMENTS WORK
Step 1: Initial Consultation ( Foundation)
We begin with a one-to-one video consultation. This is where we assess your symptoms, health history, and goals. It forms the foundation of your personalised bread protocol and helps identify whether you would benefit from further testing.
Step 2: Optional Nutrigenetics Testing
Following your consultation, and ONLY if you need, I will recommend specific reports based on your health profile. There are 11 possible nutrigenetic reports that explore aspects such as methylation, detoxification, inflammation, and digestion. These insights help us adapt your bread — including fermentation method, ingredients, and frequency — to support your unique biology.
Step 3: Gut Health Testing (Only if Needed)
If we identify signs of significant digestive imbalance, I may also recommend a gut health test. This stool analysis gives us a detailed picture of your microbiome, digestive function, and inflammatory markers, allowing us to go further in customising your protocol.
This is not a diagnostic process, but an evidence-based, personalised nutritional and lifestyle interpretation — designed to support long-term, systemic change in a delicious, empowering way.
Is there a cheaper alternative?
I appreciate that personal consultations and a functional approach to personalised bread may be out of reach, but that does not mean that the bread is. So if you're looking for a more accessible starting point, you may prefer our Fresh Bread Subscription: freshly baked sourdough delivered to your door, with guidance to gently explore how bread can support your wellbeing.
