The Sourdough School

BALM – Proven as one of the healthiest approaches to bread in the world.

Based in the walled gardens of Dr. Vanessa Kimbell's beautiful Victorian home in rural Northamptonshire, UK, we tutor individuals and train bakers and healthcare professionals in Baking as Lifestyle Medicine (BALM). Personalising bread to your lifestyle, gut microbiome, and unique genetics for optimal health—tailoring fermentation, fibre, and diversity so that your daily bread becomes the foundation of your health.

Graduation Instructions & Recipe Submission

Learning Objective

Our graduation process is designed to rigorously assess your' the application of interdisciplinary knowledge from both the 'Personalisation of Bread Module' and the 'Bake for Health Module'. The graduation task involves:

  1. Recipe Development: you will need to create a unique recipe, integrating BALM principles, learned theories, and personalisation techniques.
  2. Case Study Application: The recipe is applied to a case study, demonstrating the practical application of their comprehensive BALM protocol knowledge, and relevant research papers.
  3. One-on-One Assessment: Students have a face-to-face session with me to discuss and assess their recipe in depth.
  4. Presentation and Sharing: Upon successful assessment, students present their recipe and insights to their peers, encouraging knowledge sharing and peer learning.

This comprehensive approach ensures a holistic assessment of their understanding and practical application of the course content.

Learning Outcome

You will consolidate your knowledge, and share it. Bread and baking is about sharing, and this task is a wonderful way to graduate and apply the principles of the course to a recipe.

It also enables me to apply the personalised teaching with you and pick up on anything that is missing, as I will be assessing and approving each recipe. If there are any gaps in your knowledge, then I will have the chance to talk this through with you.
