Oncologist Professor Robert Thomas

Professor Robert Thomas
Professor Robert Thomas

Our In-House Oncologist, Professor Robert Thomas

We are really delighted to announce that Professor Robert Thomas, who is a full-time NHS Consultant Oncologist at Bedford and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals and a teacher at Cambridge University, has been contributing to the “Give White Bread the Flick” campaign, is bringing awareness to increasing the nutrition of bread and understanding of cancer prevention through nutrition.

Professor Thomas will be on hand to advise on any issues relating to cancer and our approach to sourdough, and we look forward to chatting with him throughout 2021 on issues relating to both cancer and sourdough.

Professor Thomas is the visiting Professor of Sports and Nutritional Science at the University of Bedfordshire.  Day-to-day he manages patients with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormones and biologically targeted treatments. Still, he incorporates nutritional and lifestyle strategies to enhance their effect, reduce side effects and improve overall well-being.

When we read Robert’s book, ‘How To Live‘, it was clear that Robert’s passion for eating nourishing foods is in total synergy with The Sourdough School’s approach of baking to nourish.  As head of a Lifestyle and Cancer Research Unit Robert also designs and conducts government-backed studies evaluating the impact of exercise, diet and natural therapies on cancer, other chronic diseases and more recently, recovery from covid-19.

Published Works

In collaboration with Universities in Southern California, Cambridge and Glasgow, this unit has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers and regularly presents studies and chairs academic sessions at numerous medical, food and sports conferences across the world. He is a patron of two cancer support charities and advises Macmillan and other support groups on their informal materials for patients.

He trained at the Royal Marsden, Royal Free and Mount Vernon hospitals, London. A period of full-time laboratory and clinical research followed at the Institute of Cancer, National Hospital for Nervous Diseases and Duke University, North Carolina. For this laboratory and clinical research, he won the Junior Oncologist of the Year award. Now, as both an oncologist and nutritional scientist, he is able to bridge the gap between the two specialisations.

Award-Winning

He has recently also been awarded the British Oncology Association’s ‘Oncologist of the Year’, The Hospital Doctor Magazine ‘Doctor of the Year’, won the NHS Communication Prize and the Royal College Research Medal.
