Vitamin A

Learning Objective

Vitamin A deficiency and its impact on gut health and the mucous membranes.

Vitamin A, a fat-soluble vitamin, plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and function of mucous membranes. These membranes line various body cavities and internal organs, including significant portions of the gastrointestinal tract. In the context of the gut, mucous membranes not only provide a barrier against pathogens but also facilitates nutrient absorption and interact intimately with the gut microbiome.

Carriers of BCO1 gene variants, likely to be poor converters, may benefit from consuming preformed vitamin A found in liver, fish oils and dairy foods.

Learning Outcome

Vitamin A's role in maintaining mucous membrane health, particularly in the gut, is a critical aspect of overall digestive health and microbiome balance. Your focus on incorporating this understanding into the realm of nutrition, bread-making, and lifestyle medicine offers a holistic approach to health that resonates with the principles of social justice, equality, and environmentalism. This approach not only enhances individual health but also contributes to broader societal well-being.
