BAKE WITH THE HANDS OF AN ARTISAN AND THE MIND OF A CLINICIAN

Set within the walled gardens of Dr Vanessa Kimbell's beautiful Victorian home in rural Northamptonshire, The Sourdough School is home to the Proven Bread Programme, teaching the art and science of nutrition, the gut microbiome and fermentation in bread. We train bakers to produce Diversity Bread® and healthcare professionals to personalise bread through Baking as Lifestyle Medicine. Arrange a conversation today.

Prescribing BALM

Supporting Health Equality

Baking as Lifestyle Medicine represents a profound shift in how healthcare providers are able to support patient well-being. This extraordinary approach provides a tangible and accessible method to improve both physical and mental health, which is grounded in extensive clinical research as part of Vanessa Kimbell's Doctorate conducted by the Sourdough School. Our Diploma Students are trained to clinically prescribe BALM. The BALM Protocol is the framework for the way the Sourdough Club teaches people to approach baking.  By inviting their patients to join the club, they learn to bake nourishing bread that enhances mental and physical and mental health as a social prescription.

In the video below, Dr Ed Copley explains how BALM can be used as a social prescription and is a holistic approach empowering patients to take an active role in their health. It addresses the social determinants of health through the integration of health and pleasure.
