How to Create Your Own Botanical Blend Flour

Learning Objective

Please find a useful Downloadable Tasks Sheet for the botanical blend task.  Please print and create your blend and post it to the forum for your task. This is a great opportunity to create the kind of flour you might use in your granulation loaf and consider applying the research to your choice of ingredients.  Please consider the ratios and keep any botanicals aligned with the suggested percentages. This task enables students to understand and apply the principles of biodiversity in baking by creating a botanical blend flour, focusing on the impact of grain diversity on health, gut microbiome, and sustainable agricultural practices.

Learning Outcome

You will learn to create diversity in your flour. By the end of this task, students will have successfully created their own botanical blend flour, demonstrating an understanding of:

  • The nutritional benefits of incorporating a variety of grains and seeds into bread include improved fibre content, enhanced mineral and vitamin diversity, and the role of these nutrients in supporting gut health.
  • The importance of biodiversity in agriculture for soil health, pest management, and environmental sustainability.
  • The practical skills in selecting, blending, and testing different grains and seeds to create a flour blend that is both nutritious and flavorful.
  • The ability to critically assess the impact of their choices on personal health and the environment, reflecting on the broader implications of food production and consumption patterns.

This approach ensures a comprehensive learning experience, grounding practical baking skills in the values of suitability and social justice and resulting in a deeper understanding of nutrition, health, and environmental stewardship through baking as lifestyle medicine.
