About
toasted with butter or hummus, alongside some freshly made soup or dahl
want to bake primarily for my family - husband and two boys - 12 and 16
My Work
Originally from Nigeria, lived in the US for 10 years, before settling in the UK 17 years ago
Now based in Ipswich, Suffolk
GP and functional/lifestyle medicine doctor, mainly working in my NHS practice currently but I also have a private mainly remote integrative medicine clinic, with clients in the UK and in Nigeria
I am the last of 3 daughters of a baker (mum owns a traditional bakery in Lagos, Nigeria) - we grew up in the bakery!
I loved to bake mainly cakes and pastries but have done so minimally in last 10 years mainly due to health/weight control, esp as became more aware of inflammatory impact of white flour and sugar
I am also involved in setting up a church community cafe as a CIC in the same neighborhood as my practice -we plan to hire care leavers, training them as baristas and bakers, and mentoring them with life skills to enhance their employability
Passionate about Baking as Lifestyle Medicine
I would love to be able to bake again in a way that supports health - so that bread/baked goods are no longer "off limits" or only very occasional treats
I would love to understand how to support my patients to eat better bread in an "accessible" way (esp with regards to time and finances) but also in a way that supports their individual health needs
I woud love to understand the above translates outside of the UK e.g what does a diversity flour blend look like in Nigeria
My Community
My NHS practice is in an area of high deprivation, with the accompanying statistics re: health outcomes esp around diabetes, obesity and cancer
As above, I'm not sure yet if/how the individualised BALM protocol can be accessible to families who are short on time and money but I am open to learning so I can pass it on the motivated.
For our community cafe, (The Oak and Berry it will be called), we hope to teach our care leavers to make sourdough bread but also to run workshops from the cafe in our community kitchen that will generate revenue for the CIC
How I use BALM Protocol
as above but in summary
bake for my family and friends
support my patients to eat better bread
train others to make good bread
